Michael Rofe's memories of Alty Grammar. Updated from original posted on AGS site 25 Nov 1998 Alty Grammar will always be a special place, The ringing of the bell, Charlie Howard barking out "You boy!"or was that Keith Knodding ? No both of them. Mr Sugden showing the black and white greek classic epic shot on school grounds with boys for defenders of that pass. What was the name? I was never sure who was trapped in time the boys on the celluloid or that dear old man initiating another generation into his own Alty tradition. Arty Mills and his soft words of encouragement emboldening the freestyle creative in you marking you up later as a little ahead in technique but sadly not in execution. Andy Black sending you out in the world worried that your sweetheart relationship will pan out like 1984 and somebody is watching you. Mr. Horsley and Jon Hughes pounding any energy in your body out of you and creating similar doubts about the practicality of that relationship. The Rugby songs on the bus To be to bai..to @#$* ke---aye.and Dinah. Gordon the groundsman and his 900 Kwacker amazed all the teams with his ropey single and double deckers. Dining rooms with sprog corridors on the first day of term and smuggled in fireworks around November. Alex Green and stories of Zep and wine made France seem not bad after all. Fred Talbot and Scottish trips to view the Autumn meteor showers, Fred's still a star and caught up in precipitation once more it seems. Mike Wingate and his cheerful style made the accurate planing woodworking surgery of Mr.Surgeon comealive in 73 who is the new boy now I wonder. Same year we got Knowles and Barton and Killian too, I took woodwork what else was I to do. John Taylor beating Math into us or just plain beating us on the Rugby field. Its our ball Sir come back we'd cry. It all comes back in the twinkle in my eye. Well I'm only 41 so there must be more of you out there who remember being transfixed by Roy Colemans stare. "Tickets boy how many?" "Well you see Sir! its like this Sir!" went the Summer Fate routine, not mispelled here I can assure you. What you need for your fundraising now Roy, is Gary Brocklehurst who single handedly outsold all of 5L in 75 or was that 74. You see 41's catching up I can't remember anymore! So from behind these old Alty eyes, if I haven't mentioned you be you ex-pupil, teacher or supporting crew just think on a while of your old Alty times and what they meant to you. Fund raising to preserve AGS is surely the least we ooughta do.

BEFORE GOING TO THE GARNDERS ARMS FOR A SWIFT ONE ON THE WAY HOME.... WELL....NAUGHTY NIGE HAD INHERITED A HONDA 50 CC STEPHRU FROM HIS BROTHER I HAD A KNACKERED OUT PUCH MAXI AND ROFEY HAD A CLAPPED OUT MOBYLETTE FROM THAT OLD GIT THAT OWNED THE MOPED SHOP NEAR STAMFORD PARK, SO FAR SO GOOD...FINISH SCHOOL RACE TO THE BIKE SHEDS IN TRUE LE MANS STYLE,AND WERE OFF!,THE RACERS WAIT AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS AT MARLBOROUGH RD RED.....AMBER...AND NIGE IS OFF.....GREEN......THE REST OF THE PACK INCLUDING HUNDREDS OF GUYS ON RACING BIKES WITH THE HANDLEBARS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN ARE OFF!! UNFORTUNATELY MIKE HAD SEEN THE DOUBLE DECKER AND DECIDED TO GIVE IT A QUICK'NURF' FROM ' BEHIND, IN THE PROCESS LOOSING HIS CONTACT LENSES ON THE ROAD....HENCE THE CURSING AND SWEARING....
